Life on the river in Mount Holly
“Connecting Community & Nature” is the city's tagline, and Mount Holly sits right on the banks of the Catawba. Much of what there is to do outdoors revolves around the water and the trail system:
- Tuckaseege Park: three baseball fields, a dog park and a skate park.
- River Street Park: disc golf, a fishing pier and a kayak launch.
- Ransom Hunter Park, formerly Glendale Park, opened September 20, 2025, funded in part by a $374,227 state grant.
- RiverHawk Greenway, including the A&E Riverfront Trail along the river, plus Dutchman's Creek Trail, which crosses Hwy. 27.
- Mountain Island Park at Mount Holly: 6+ miles of Tarheel Trailblazers mountain bike trails, though the park has been closed since September 7, 2022, with reopening planned for 2028.
Woodlawn, Veterans and Catawba Heights parks round out the city's list. Downtown, Mount Holly is pursuing a Veterans Park expansion a block from the center of town, and it has restored the Coca-Cola mural at 121 N. Main St. The Mount Holly Museum covers local history.
Prices: why we lean on county numbers
Canopy Realtor® Association doesn't break out Mount Holly on its own, so the closest market read is Gaston County. The county's September 2026 median was $339,900, just 1.9% above last year's $333,450, and the year-to-date median reached $327,000 (+2.2%). There were 286 closings that month, 3.9 months of inventory and 52 days on market until sale, ten fewer than in September 2025.
To zero in on the city, Census data helps: from 2020 to 2024, Mount Holly's median owner-occupied home value was $337,800, with 68.8% of units owner-occupied and median gross rent around $1,256. The city had roughly 7,598 housing units and an estimated 19,033 people as of July 1, 2025, on 10.94 square miles.
Because county figures blend many different towns, pricing an offer here means pulling recent comparable sales from the same part of Mount Holly. As for new construction, no builder showed a community selling inside Mount Holly city limits as of October 2026: True Homes' Mooreland Oaks page lists no available homes or floor plans, and the link for D.R. Horton's Azalea Ridge now leads to a Mount Holly page with no community on it. What does turn up are scattered new homes from small builders, which get evaluated one at a time like any resale; with the county median at $339,900, much of that market sits under the $525,000 NC 1st Home Advantage sales price limit, subject to qualification.
The city tax rate and how it got here
For FY2023-24 the city adopted $0.405 per $100 of value, a 16.49% rate cut. The 2026-27 fee schedule shows 0.405 again; its text has a decimal typo, but it spells out “forty point five cents” and the administrative table matches. The 2026-27 budget ordinance was posted as an image, so we couldn't read it directly.
The county's share, 59.9 cents, is based on WCCB's May 13, 2026 report on the Gaston budget, since the county website wasn't available to confirm it. Combined, that's 1.004, or roughly $3,012 a year on a $300,000 valuation. Before you sign, ask for the exact figure on the property you're considering.
Roads, drive times and local jobs
The city bills itself as “just 20 minutes from downtown Charlotte.” OpenStreetMap's estimate from downtown Mount Holly comes in at about 22 minutes to Uptown (12 miles) and 25 minutes to Charlotte Douglas (11 miles) without traffic; rush hour adds more. NC 273 was recently widened, and the Gateway Center Medical Plaza sits just off it.
On the jobs side, Gold Bond Building Products, a National Gypsum affiliate, announced a $90 million expansion of its Mount Holly plant in 2023, keeping 100 jobs and adding about 11. For anyone working in Charlotte, though, those 12 miles to Uptown are the number that matters most.
Down payment help in Mount Holly
State programs work here the same way they do across North Carolina, subject to qualification. NC 1st Home Advantage offers $15,000 toward the down payment (first-time buyer, veteran or targeted census tract; $525,000 price cap; 640 credit; subject to qualification) and is paired with the NC Home Advantage Mortgage, which on its own provides up to 3% of the loan for incomes up to $158,000. Buyers earning under 80% of AMI can look at the Community Partners Loan Pool: up to 25% of the price or $50,000, whichever is less, with 6 hours of education plus 2 hours of one-on-one counseling and county income and sales-price limits (in Gaston, $340,000 for an existing home and $346,000 for a new one), subject to qualification. The FHA, VA, USDA and ITIN guides cover the other routes, each subject to qualification.
Locally, the City of Gastonia's homebuyer assistance program requires Gaston County residency outside High Shoals and Spencer Mountain; under that published rule, Mount Holly residents appear eligible, subject to qualification. Its standard version is up to $7,500 (0% second mortgage, 5 years, 20% forgiven per year) for first-time buyers at or below 80% of AMI, and the $15,000 pilot closed June 30, 2026. Its current status is unclear, so confirm whether funds are available, subject to qualification. Terms and funds can change; your lender confirms them. Full index on the programs hub.
