Town Hall lives in an 1894 house
Weddington conducts its business from the Thomas-Wrenn House, built in 1894. The municipality is far younger than the building: the act creating it took effect on May 2, 1983.
Basic services are split up like this. Law enforcement comes through a contract with the Union County Sheriff's Office. Fire calls go to the volunteers of the Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department. What the town's website doesn't spell out is how that fire coverage is paid for, which is worth asking before you buy.
A possible park beside the Thomas-Wrenn House
The open land next to Town Hall may become a park. The town is studying the idea and set two listening sessions, on September 19 and October 19, 2026 (town notice). If you're closing on a home this fall, there's still time to catch the second one.
Fourteen minutes to Ballantyne, twenty-eight to Uptown
Measured from the center of Weddington with OpenStreetMap/OSRM on October 8, 2026, Ballantyne is 8.9 miles away, roughly 14 minutes on clear roads. Uptown Charlotte is 16.1 miles, about 28 minutes. At morning rush, both numbers grow.
Here's another benchmark: workers living in town report a 28.0-minute average one-way trip to the Census (ACS 2020-2024). If your office isn't in Ballantyne, that's the more realistic expectation.
How many homes Weddington has, and what they're worth
About 4,583 housing units (ACS 2024 5-year) spread over 17.53 square miles, close to 260 per square mile. Owners live in 95.1% of them, and those homes carry a median value of $824,100 (ACS 2020-2024). Prefer to rent first? Median gross rent runs about $1,927 a month.
Don't let the market box above mislead you: Canopy doesn't separate Weddington, so its $474,000 reflects all of Union County in September 2026. Pricing an offer here takes recent sales within the same subdivision.
Builder-listed new construction is limited and priced high, per each builder's site (October 2026), and those figures can change. Elysian at Weddington by Keystone Custom Homes offers custom homes on wooded homesites, 3–7 bedrooms and 2,404–4,016 sq ft, from $1,159,867. Classica Homes' Weddington Grove on Forest Lawn Drive is smaller still: five wooded homesites of 1 to 2+ acres, some with basement options, priced from $1,739,900 to $1,894,900 and up. The builder says these are the final homesites, with a spec home ready in December. Neither comes near the $525,000 NC 1st Home Advantage sales price limit, so a buyer relying on that program, subject to qualification, would be looking at resale, and at an $824,100 median value even that is a narrow field. If someone pitches another project using the town's name, check county records to confirm the parcel really is in Weddington.
3.5 cents: the number in the draft budget
The June 2026 public hearing featured the preliminary FY2027 budget at 3.5 cents per $100 of value, identical to what the town published for FY2024-25. We couldn't locate the adopted FY2026-27 version, so treat the figure as reported. Paired with Union County's 0.4342 it totals 0.4692, which on $824,100 comes to about $3,867 a year before exemptions, not counting any possible fire charge.

Frequently asked questions
Does Weddington have its own police department?
Not according to the town: it contracts with the Union County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement. Fire calls are answered by the Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department. The town doesn't explain how fire coverage is funded, so when you review a property's tax bill, ask whether a district charge shows up beyond the 3.5 cents.
Why does Weddington's market box say $474,000?
Because Canopy Realtor® Association doesn't publish Weddington separately, and that September 2026 median covers all of Union County. Values inside town run much higher: the Census estimates $824,100 for owner-occupied homes. When it's time to offer, recent sales from the same subdivision are what matter.
When is the next session about the park beside Town Hall?
The town set two dates to gather input on a possible park on the open land beside the Thomas-Wrenn House: September 19 and October 19, 2026. The first has passed. If you're planning to buy in Weddington, the October session is an easy way to learn about the project before you sign.
What if I work in Uptown rather than Ballantyne?
The drive roughly doubles: about 28 minutes and 16.1 miles from the town center to Uptown Charlotte, versus about 14 minutes to Ballantyne, both free-flow OpenStreetMap/OSRM estimates from October 8, 2026. The Census average for workers in town is 28.0 minutes. Try the trip at rush hour.
Which schools do Weddington homes feed into?
The whole town belongs to Union County Public Schools, a district of about 53 schools and roughly 40,000 students. Which school a home is assigned to depends on its exact address, not the town name or ZIP code. Ask the district to confirm the assignment for that address before you submit an offer.
